Quelques éclats de jade
Ashigaru are peasant soldiers enlisted for service in clan armies. They comprise a significant portion of any major military force in the Empire of Rokugan, serving as foot-soldiers. They are lowest ranked in the Buke caste. Although the perception of some samurai is that they are farmers, in truth no clan wishes to remove its farmers from the fields, so most ashigaru are recruited from towns or cities. They generally receive only rudimentary training in basic tactics and the use of spears and bows, and are not permitted to keep their weapons after their military service ends. Most of the great houses have families of ashigaru who have served for generations, and most of those in the family have a fierce pride and loyalty equaling that of most samurai. In times of peace these hereditary ashigaru serve mostly as budoka and doshin.
